More traffic madness for Melbourne

Melbourne Motorists, already subjected to months of delays with the Eastlink Project, now face even more mayhem over the coming 18 months as the Westgate Freeway is upgraded.

wg1.jpg

Said to be the largest state-funded road project in Victoria’s history, it is set to topple the budget at a staggering $1.39 billion. Increased costs in labour, materials, after hours work, drainage, gas and electricity infrastructure relocations being blamed for the spiraling costs.

An additional exit ramp is to be built from the Bolte Bridge to take traffic toward the Burnley Tunnel which will see the Montague Street city-bound ramp at South Melbourne closed for in excess of 18 months from May 18.

More lanes and an extensive widening of the freeway to Kings Way will also be included.

The overall aim of the project is to create a smoother flowing corridor for the 160,000 motorists who use the West Gate Freeway every day.

Detours will be in place at Normanby Road, Clarendon Street, City Road and Power Street to access CityLink. For full details, contact VicRoads.

Ford boasts reborn Capri concept

Ford’s new design philosophy has produced some stunning cars in recent times such as the new-generation Fiesta and Focus.

Ford boasts reborn Capri

Now Ford has reinvented the Capri namesake as a stylish and affordable 2+2 Coupe - although shooting-brake would be a more accurate description.

Not seen since the late Eighties, the Capri will face some strong competition, with the market having become flooded with affordable Coupes in recent times.

This includes the resurrected Volkswagen Scirocco, the forthcoming Hyundai Coupe, the recently green-lit Peugeot 308 RC Z and the Toyota-Subaru collaborative Celica replacement.

Ford boasts reborn Capri

But the new Capri won’t be competing with looks alone, likely to feature the 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged unit from the Mondeo.

An all-wheel-drive RS version is also a possibility, powered by a 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine.

So far there are no official plans for the Capri from Ford before the next decade, however a concept version is expected to be revealed in 2009.

So this is where it gets really interesting.

You take your standard Mk V Golf, whack in 15mm lower suspension, stickier tyres with new wheels, tweak the chassis a bit, add larger brakes and stick on a GT badge. Now, you have a Golf GT. But that’s not all.

Using a supercharger and a turbocharger, Volkswagen has accounted for the best of both worlds, in 1.4 TSI guise. At 125kW and 240Nm, it’s a pearler of an engine. But it gets better. You also have the choice of a turbo diesel 2-litre which belts out 125kW as well, and a stump-pulling 350Nm from 1750rpm.

So, which to choose? Hmmm…this isn’t going to be easy.

CarAdvice staff gathered in Sydney for the verdict.

2009 JAGUAR XF First Steer & Review

tc-xf-snow.jpg

“Jaguar says they are building ‘Beautiful fast cars’. They’re right. The new XF is a superb car in every way and is bound to give its German rivals a migraine or two”

- By Anthony Crawford & David Twomey - Part One & Part Two.

I’m not sure why it has taken so long for this British stalwart to start building “beautiful, fast cars” again.

The incredibly ‘cool’ E-Type series, produced from 1961 through to 1974, still sits on pole position, as one of the best looking cars of all time.

And before that, it was Jaguar’s Mark 11 saloon, which preceded the beautiful XJ6 Series 1. Both were stunning automobiles, with a huge following throughout the world.

In fact, it was these three Jaguars’ of the past, which most inspired chief designer Ian Callum and his team, to attempt to return the company to one, which creates “beautiful, fast cars”.

tc-xf-rear-side.jpg

I don’t think anyone expected the XF to deliver the kind of driving experience you get from behind the wheel of this extraordinarily rewarding car.

The XF is definitely better looking in the metal, than any digital SLR rendition we shot of the car, at the Australian launch this week.

You can clearly see both XK and Aston Martin DNA have contributed to the overall stying of the XF, and as far as inspiration donors go, you could do a whole lot worse.

tc-xf-front-bridge.jpg

It’s a fast looking shape which looks more like a coupe from the rear/side point of view, with beautiful curves on the side window frames and the rather extreme rake of the rear window. Stunning.

tc-xf-close-up-rear.jpg

From the A-pillar forward though, is where it gets a little more aggressive. The large side vents are identical to those on the XK coupe and real mesh front grille is more a revolution from that overly retro look which adorned the S-Type.

2009 Renault Megane spied

A French car magazine has captured photos of a completely undisguised 2009 Renault Megane.

2009 Renault Megane spied

The images reveal both a sensible five-door version and hot coupe just begging for an F1 treatment.

Similarities with the purposely flamboyant design of the Megane Concept can also be seen, which was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.

2009 Renault Megane spied

The five-door Megane will rival the likes of the Ford Focus, VW Golf and Mazda3 among a sea of conventional hatch backs.

However it is the performance version which will draw the most interest, following Renault’s reputation for producing brilliant hot hatches.

Appropriately, the 2009 Renault Megane will make its official debut at the Paris Auto Show in September with European sales to follow later this year.

When you think of heading out to buy your next work van, the choices are rather astonishing. It would seem there’s a never ending array of wheel bases, roof heights and engine combinations to choose from, all of which soon enough start adding up to only one thing - a rather large bill.

Wouldn’t it be nice if someone offered you a dependable, basic work vehicle which was not only cheap to purchase, but cheap to run, cheap to service and offered a warranty second to none? Now, someone has.

Hyundai have made a big impact on the large van sector this year with the introduction of their all new, Turkish built iLoad commercial and iMax passenger orientated van series.

iload0002.jpg

iLoad Cargo Van in ‘Crystal White’

Determined to offer the value associated with the brand whilst losing none of the durable and, dare I say it, unbreakable reliability this sector of vehicles requires, the i-Series vans are sure to prove popular among those who have nothing to prove.

All too often now the trades vehicle is either an over priced Euro offering that spends too much time in the shop, or a small car based utility that’s more show pony than work horse. The iLoad on the other hand is neither of these things and instead promises to fill the gap with modest, reliable transport for just about any application.

iload0004.jpg

The first of our contenders is the petrol powered Cargo Van. It’s well built, easy to drive, surprisingly manoeuvrable, and although a little more gutless than its diesel cousin, is nonetheless fluid to drive and very stable, even at highway speeds.

The 2.4 litre DOHC four cylinder petrol develops 129kW @ 6,000rpm but lacks the ability to rev quickly with only 228Nm available from 4,200 revs. The result is an engine that is challenged when confronted with any considerable payload and struggles to perform well in traffic or on the open road, especially if hills are involved.

iload0005.jpg

Sitting rather high in the semi-bonneted front the engine has one saving grace in that it drives the rear wheels giving a very positive feel through corners. The five speed manual offers a good spread of cogs and is rather light to use with a decent clutch helping things along considerably.

ADR fuel consumption tests claim 10.1 litres / 100km (combined), though in a week of driving - mainly around town and mainly unloaded - I found this very hard to believe. Our tests managed mid 12s and I’d dare say this would be even higher with a little weight on board.

iloadcrew0004.jpg

iLoad Crew Van in ‘Sleek Silver’

The middle (or third) seat offers only a lap type seat belt and is perhaps wide enough only for a skinny apprentice thanks to the floor mounted centre hand brake and is more useful with the tray flipped down offering small work area and two additional cup holders to those already offered in the dash. If you need to carry the team, Crew Van is definitely the pick of the pair.

A decent spread of creature comforts are offered as standard including remote central locking, AM/FM audio with single CD, power steering, air-conditioning, power windows and mirrors, front and rear mud flaps and tilt adjustable steering. I’d like to have seen cruise control fitted, even as an option, and perhaps the inclusion of bluetooth given the vehicle’s application.

imax-int-02.JPG

Twin sliding side doors and optional rear barn doors (lift type standard) offer easy access to the cargo area which offers 2375mm long x 1620mm wide (1260 between the arches) x 1350mm high dimensions over a leaf sprung rear end giving a maximum 1055kg payload.

The barn doors’ exposed wiring looms for the rear demister could pose an issue with objects catching them on entry/egress but are far easier to utilise than the giant lift gate and require far less parking space to open. Were it mine I’d be taping those wires down to avoid catching.

iload0003.jpg

iLoad is available in petrol manual or diesel manual / auto.

Ten tie down points, a thick moulded rubber floor mat and enclosed side panels provide a spacious, usable area which could easily be fitted out with shelving or racks to suit almost any trade use imaginable. Courier drivers will appreciate the 11.2 metre turning circle and dual side access too.

Crew Van on the other hand offers a little more flexibility should your work crew involve more than one other bloke and / or you have a family to consider on the weekends. With an extra row of seating offering three additional seats, cargo space is of course compromised, but the ability to carry the troops means added flexibility.

iloadcrew0002.jpg

Powered by a 2.5 litre turbo diesel developing 125kW @ 3,800rpm and a very hearty 392Nm from just 2,000rpm the common rail DOHC unit offers brilliant driving dynamics and superb flowing performance, far beyond that expected from a commercial orientated set-up. The fuel economy offered is also excellent coming in at 8.5 litres / 100km for the manual and 9.6 litres for the auto.

It is also a far better option not only for the benefits offered in terms of drivability and fuel economy, but for the flexibility to carry some extra weight. The CRDi engine offers 500kg greater towing capacity (up to 2,000kg - braked) and an extra 69kg payload, taking the total to 1,076kg.

iloadcrew0001.jpg

Having driven both the manual and automatic diesel i-Series vans now, I’d have to say my pick is the manual variant. The auto tends to be indecisive on kick-down, often selecting two cogs back when one would have done, especially at 100km/h. It’s an otherwise smooth an easy transmission, but the manual is, for this application, a far better choice given the spread of gears offered.

At the end of the day the iLoad is sure to become a popular alternative for trade and courier buyers not only for the price tag, but because it’s simple, tough, well built and most importantly durable.

iloadcrew0003.jpg

With Hyundai’s ever growing reputation for well priced, good quality products, and the iLoad van series’ combination of value and size, this new comer is an absolute winner.

Saab Australia has announced pricing for the eagerly awaited all-wheel-drive limited edition performance Saab Turbo X.

Limited Edition Saab Turbo X

Only 30 of these limited edition models will be made available to customers in Australia and New Zealand, with 25 Sport Sedan and five SportCombi models arriving between June and September this year.

The Turbo X is the first to debut the XWD (cross wheel drive) system which continuously distributes engine drive torque between the front and rear axles and also between the rear wheels.

Limited Edition Saab Turbo X

To optimise traction at take-off, the XWD system anticipates the engagement of the rear wheels unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems which need to detect front wheel slip before rear drive is activated.

It also boasts an active rear limited-slip differential (eLSD) as standard, which can transfer up to 50 per cent of maximum rear torque between the rear wheels, to whichever has more grip.

Limited Edition Saab Turbo X

The Turbo X is powered by Saab’s award winning 2.8-litre turbocharged V6 engine, producing 206kW at 5500rpm and peak torque of 400Nm between 2150rpm and 4500rpm.

This translates into a zero to 100km/h time of just 5.5 seconds.

Limited Edition Saab Turbo X

It is available exclusively in a metallic jet black finish with matte grey titanium-like accents on the front grille and other exterior details.

The limited edition Turbo X model is identifiable by its deeper front lip spoiler, re-profiled bumper, rear spoiler and bespoke 18-inch alloy wheels in a grey titanium-like finish.

Limited Edition Saab Turbo X

The interior features black leather sports seats and carbon-fibre highlights on the main fascia, door inserts, glove box and gear shift console which is unique to Turbo X.

In recognition of Saab’s turbo heritage, the Turbo X boost gauge is a replica of the original 900 Turbo display, and owners will receive a unique “Ready for Take-off” message when they start the car including their name and edition number of the car.

Pricing

Sport Sedan 2.8TV6 $88,800 (Automatic) $91,300 (Manual)

SportCombi 2.8TV6 $91,300 (Automatic) $93,800 (Manual)
